Storage Tips for Organizing a Secure and Accessible Self Storage Experience

To assist in securing your belongings, conserving storage space within your self storage unit, and have easy access to items stored in your self storage unit, the following self storage tips provide ideas to organize and store your items in a self storage unit before placement of the items.

Bedding, Clothing & Linens

Clothing, bedding, drapes and linens should be spotless and dry before entering your self storage unit. Folded items, in a manner that maintains protection of the material from dust, in containers that are sealed or folded into garment boxes can protect your items from dust while in your self storage unit.

Appliances

Refrigerators, washers, dryers, and freezers should all be spotlessly clean and dry when put into your self storage unit. If a refrigerator has doors, leave the doors slightly ajar to create air circulation in your self storage unit to help prevent moisture buildup. Smaller boxes or items may also be stored within larger appliances to conserve storage space in your self storage unit.

Dishes, Plates & Glassware

Glassware (dishes, plates, etc.) should be wrapped separately with either packing paper or bubble wrap and placed in a box. Heavier dishes should be located at the bottom of a box and lighter glassware items toward the top. Be sure to label the box “fragile” if the contents include breakable items prior to the placement in your self storage unit.

Furniture

If possible, disassemble large pieces of furniture to save space in your self storage unit. Furniture items can be protected from dust by wrapping them in blankets or furniture covers and keeping them slightly elevated with pallets or boards. Sofas and mattresses can be stored upright to save space in your self storage unit.

Books & Documents

Books should be stored flat in boxes to protect the spine. Boxes should not be overloaded to prevent damage due to heavy objects piled atop one another in your self storage unit. Important documents should be secured in sealed containers to safeguard them.

Holiday Decorations

Seasonal items and holiday decorations should be carefully packaged and each item identified. Ornaments should be wrapped separately and securely contained to ensure their safety while in your self storage unit.

Tools & Equipment

Prior to storing, all tools should be cleaned to help eliminate damage or corrosion. A light coating of oil can be applied to metal tools to protect them while in self storage. Long-handled tools (i.e. rakes or shovels) can be bound together and stored along the walls of your self storage unit.

Bicycles & Metal Items

Prior to storing bicycles and other metal equipment, they should be cleaned to remove dirt. Light coatings of lubricants can be applied to metal surfaces to help prevent rust during extended periods of self storage.

Outdoor Recreation Equipment

Outdoor recreational equipment, including four-wheelers, camping equipment, etc., should be cleaned prior to being placed in self storage. In addition to cleaning the equipment, proper storage will help protect them from weathering and damage during the off season.

Creating a Layout for Your Self Storage Unit

Your most-used items should be nearest the entrance of your self storage unit. Creating a narrow aisle through your self storage unit will enable you to easily travel to the rear of your self storage unit to access items that were placed there. Boxes should be stacked equally and labeled so you can easily find specific items in your self storage unit after extended periods of time.
